1981-83 TOYOTA HILUX
shift boot installation guide

Looking for a Toyota Hilux shift boot? We offer the best ones out there!

81-83 TOYOTA HILUX/PICKUP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove shifter knob by turning it counter clockwise.

2. Lift the forward corners of the rubber transfer case shifter cover and remove the two screws holding the original boot frame in place.

3. The boot will then slide back slightly and become free of two metal retainers. Lift straight up over the shifter stick.

4. Remove the old boot from the tabbed, square metal frame. Scrape off any excess glue/aged gunk with a blade and sandpaper.

5. Prepare a work surface of cardboard/old newspapers, etc. Practice fitting the new boot over the frame; get a feel for how much overlap will be required. Begin molding the seams to meet the corners of the metal frame.

6. Using a quality contact adhesive and a good (but preferably disposable) stiff-haired brush, apply a band of glue about one inch wide along the inside edge of the new boot. Due to the absorbency of the leather, this will probably require two coats applied in quick succession. Be careful not to let these glued surfaces come prematurely into contact. Patiently hold the boot like an ice cream cone for at least ten minutes.

7. Observe the drying of the glue. Wait until it appears to be uniformly ‘flat’ and is non tacky to a light touch. (Okay, here comes the only tricky part:) Beginning on the notched metal tab side, lightly fold the leather against itself around the metal frame.

8. Continue to work around the frame. Once in place and looking good, apply lots of firm, kneading pressure to ensure a good bond.

9. Installation of the completed boot is a simple reversal of the removal process listed above: slide the boot over the shifter stick, push forward into the retaining clips, insert the two screws through the metal tabs and replace the shifter knob.

ENJOY YOUR NEW LEATHER BOOTS!

Useful tip

You have installed a product made out of genuine leather. As you know, to maintain a leather product in good condition, you should take care of it. We suggest occasionally (every 4-6 week for example) applying some leather conditioner/UV protector to keep your leather from drying up in the sun and cracking.
